The Unix Account
The Unix Account is the single most important building block to becoming a member of the Internet. In away, it is like your home and the block of land from which it is built upon. It provides you with your identity & place where fellow Internet commuters are able to address you when sending E-Mail. It also has the potential to provide you with many facilities and services as you will soon see below.

Telnet
Telnet is program that provides an interactive session to any host machine on the Internet in real time. With this facility you are able to connect from your home (Celestial Enterprises) to your University or Work accounts (if you have one available). Plus there are many Internet services available which you can interact with in real time such Archie, or MUDs, etc...

FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
The file transfer protocol provides a way for the Internet community to share files. This is achieved by archive sites (with extremely large hard disk drives), such as Universities and commerical businesses, which allow you to download or upload files.

IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
IRC gives the Internet community a way of communicating with each other in real-time (beware of the lag monster). This is achieved by connecting to an IRC server which provides the necessary means for linking the selected groups together.

UseNet News
The UseNet News is the largest resource of information and help found on the the Internet (non-real-time). The best way to describe it would be to think of it as a local news paper. It's available every day, containing current and old news covering a wide variety of topics, groups and subjects. You pick the areas that interest you the most and you start reading. If you are looking for help (make sure you select the appropriate topic, group or subject) or can help someone else, simply compose your article and post it for everyone to see.

WWW (World Wide Web) & Gopher
The WWW is the one of the fastest growth areas on the Internet today. It will literally blow your mind to see the vast amount of information that can be found on Web pages. You will find government, comerical, and private Web pages containing everything from entertainment to commercial science. Because the Web is growing at a phenomenal rate you will need the assistance of a Web Search Engine (see our Search Engine link page) to help you search & locate the information you are looking for. And yes, you guessed it, the Web Search Engine also presents it's self as a Web Page.

E-Mail (Electronic Mail)
E-Mail is an easy and painless way of sending a letter, file or a picture to friends, pen-pals or work-mates, whether they be located in the same suburb as you or half way around the world. You'll have to admit, E-Mail is a pretty handy facility to have. E-Mail is also faster than your average postman too! It would not be unreasonable for your E-Mail to be delivered within 60 seconds of sending it(delivery times can be affected by what is sent and how much is sent).

Talk
Talk gives you the ability to communicate (chat) point-to-point with a friend or associate located anywhere on the Internet in real-time via your keyboard.

Unix Shell
The Unix shell provides those users who prefer the power of the command line interface (CLI) to that of a GUI. With the Unix CLI (not for the faint hearted), you will have full access to the Unix shells powerful scripting abilities and many Unix programs, such as C, C++ compilers.

SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) & PPP (Point to Point Protocol)
SLIP and PPP allow your computer to act as if it was directly connected to the Internet. What this simply means is that you will be able to use those familar GUI programs, such as Netscape, Explorer, Eudora, FTP, Telnet, etc. These programs are run directly from your home PC, and make use of your existing PC hardware such as your graphics display and sound card (i.e. Netscape, Explorer, etc) to present you with a more pleasant and friendly image of the Internet.

Private WWW Home Page
With every Subscription (unless otherwise specified) you will have the opportunity to present your own personalised Web Page, so that others many enjoy your creativity. In order to do this, it definately helps if you have an understanding of how to compose your own Web pages (if not there are many HTML books found at good bookshops)and/or access to an HTML Editor (such as Hotdog for Windows, or WebWriter/2 for OS/2).
