What do I need to Maintain my Personal Home Web Page?
There are essentially two programs you require in order to maintain your home web page(s).
[White Dot] Web Page Editor

A web page editor is a program simular in nature to that of a wordprocessor. Basically a web page editor has a set of different page formatting options to enable you to create, what may appear at times as complex but are quite simple, web page documents.

In order to get you started, Celestial Enterprises has take the time to store a couple of different web editors, such as HotDog for Windows, WebWriter/2 for OS/2, on our FTP server.

[White Dot] File Transfer Program (FTP)

Now that you have created or modified your web page(s), you need to upload the web page into your personal web page directory.

How we actually do this depends on the web editor you are using and the type of GUI operating system that you have.

Some web editors (such as HotDog for Windows) has the FTP facility built into it. If you will be using such a web editor, then you don't need to obtain an FTP client for your operating system.

If you are not using a web editor with the FTP facilities built into it, you will need to get a copy of an FTP client (such as CuteFTP for Windows) for your operating system. If you are using OS/2 Warp or Warp Connect and have installed the TCP/IP portion of the installation process, you can setup and use the OS/2 FTP client to upload/download, delete, rename your web pages.

How do I Upload/Download to/from my Personal Account?
[White Dot] Foreword

In order to be able to do this step, you will need to have an FTP client for your operating system. The FTP client must be able to offer you a way to use your Username & Password, just as if your were logging into your personal account. And in fact, that is exactly what you will be doing. Basically the FTP client offers you a way of uploading (sending) or downloading (retrieving) files from your personal Unix account.

[White Dot] How Do I FTP into my Personal Account?
  1. You will need to have configured your FTP client to ftp to, ftp.celestial.com.au
  2. You will need to have configured your FTP client to log you in as a User (and not by anonymous) by supplying to the FTP client your Username & Password.

Once you have successfully FTP'd into your personal account, your FTP client should display your directory contents. And within those directory contents you should see a directory listed as follows;

drwxr-xr-x   2 user    private      1024 Jun 30 17:28 .public_html/

The .public_html directory is the predefined directory where Celestial Enterprises Web Server can locate and make publicly available your web page(s).

[White Dot] How do I Upload or Download my web page(s)?

  1. You must change into the directory named .public_html (changing directories usually means double clicking on the directory name from within your FTP client). Once you have successfully changed directories, your FTP client should display the directory contents, something like;
    drwx------   2 user    private      1024 Jun 30 17:28 ./
    drwx--x--x   4 user    private      1024 Aug 30 19:50 ../
    -rw-r--r--   1 user    private       335 Sep 14 17:14 homepage.htm

  2. From within the directory contents you must have a web page named homepage.htm. This is the actual web page searched for, when someone on the Internet wants to surf your web page (eg. http://www.celestial.com.au/~user).

    homepage.htm is the main web page that you will be needing to modify to contain your new links to other sites and/or other web page(s) within your personal account. So, be absolutely sure that this one exists, otherwise no body will be able to visit your web page.

  3. Now that you are in the directory called .public_html, you should be able to simply Upload or Download, by selecting from within your FTP client the Upload or Download menu functions.

  4. Special Note: When Uploading or Downloading, be sure to select the appropriate transfer mode from within your FTP client. There are essentially to modes: ASCII or Text and Binary.

    ASCII or Text Files
    Your web page files or documents fall into this category. Uploading or downloading ASCII text files in this mode correctly adjusts/modifies those files for the operating systems they are being sent too.

    Binary Files
    Your .gif or .jpg files fall into this category. Uploading or downloading your graphics files in this mode, will enable the file(s) being sent, to be sent without intepretation or modification.
